I was asked a while back to post a 'how-to' on
letter block making. I am so sorry it has taken me so long!! Please forgive the laziness in me. So you are no longer in suspense, here is my letter block tutorial:
Supplies:2x4/power equipment to cut the wood (although, I was told that home depot will cut it for you)
scrapbook paper (preferably one that is not too busy)
mod podge (you can find it at your local craft store)
paint brush/foam brush (to apply the mod podge)
computer/printer
spray paint (in coordinating color)
ribbon/fabric (optional)
sand paper (optional)
Step 1:Cut the 2x4 into the desired lengths. Be creative, this is your project!
Step 2:Using your computer, find a font that you like, and print letters, phrases, bible verses, etc. onto the scrapbook paper. You may want to practice on regular printer paper to find out how big the font should be to fit on the wood.
Step 3:Cut the paper to the desired size for the wood.
Step 4:Spray paint the wood any color you want. Neutral colors work well, but again, be creative!! I have also seen this done with crackeled paint, it looks really good!! If you want the weathered look, once the paint has dried, lightly sand the edges with a piece of sand paper.
Step 5:After the paint has dried, put a layer of mod podge on to the front, and lay the already cut scrapbook paper on top. Wait awhile for that to dry. (If it doesn't dry first, we have found that the ink on the paper can run) Once it is dry, put a thin layer of mod podge on top. Be careful not to over do it, because the paper can become too wet and tear or the ink will start to run.
Step 6:After all is dry, you can decorate it however you want! Add ribbons, fabric, raffia or jute bows for a nice touch.
I think that about does it! These make perfect gifts, and are sooo easy to make. Let me know if I left anything out! Good luck, and happy block making!
